How and why to use an eyelash curler

One of my can't-live-without beauty products would have to be an eyelash curler. I am always recommending my friends to buy one because I think they are such little miracle workers! My lashes are naturally quite flat and don't have much of a curl to them so using a curler makes all the difference to really open up my my eyes and give me a more doll-eyed look.

Over the years I have tried several brands and two of my favourites would have to be the Shu Uemera curler (review here) and the MAC full lash curler. I recently lost my Shu Uemera one that I'd had for quite some time so I decided to repurchase my MAC trusty old favourite!

About their Full Lash Curler MAC cosmetics says "Curls lashes. Adds all natural glam! An artist essential: a pro-quality tool. Shapes and curves lashes into all-natural curl. Primes them for mascara or false lashes. Use it pre-lash and pre-mascara. Easy to use. Designed to curve gently round the lash line. Works with a simple squeeze and release motion! Totally tearproof!"

A lot of people always joke and say it looks a bit like a tool of torture but I promise you it doesn't hurt at all and they are very simple to use. Trust me there is no need to fear the curler ;) 

Here is how to use them:

• Always use your eyelash curlers on clean eyelashes. Never curl lashes after you apply mascara because as the mascara dries, lashes can stick to the curler & be torn from the roots; damaging your lashes. If necessary, use eye makeup remover to remove old mascara.
• Next, simply spread the handles of the curler and center your upper lashes in between the upper and lower pads. Place the curler at the base of the upper lash line, as close to the roots as possible, without pinching your lid. Now squeeze gently! Hold for five to ten seconds and release. Once you feel more comfortable with your new tool, try walking the curler out to the end of the lashes as opposed to just clamping it down. This will give your lashes a more natural, and less harsh looking curl. Repeat on the other eye and don't use the curler on your bottom lashes.

Now that your lashes are all lovely and curled just apply 2 to 3 coats of your favorite mascara, wiggling the wand from root to tip.

And voila! Spidery long lashes in a snap!

For even longer lasting curled lashes here a little tip; with your blowdryer on low heat, blow air on your curler for no more than 5 seconds. Touch the metal. If it's hot, let it cool for a few seconds. You don't want to burn your eyelid. Now just continue to use your curlers as per the above steps. Heating is not necessary to use an eyelash curler; however, the heat will make a noticeable difference in curling your lashes.

Clinique Bottom Lash Mascara!

People say that good things come in small packages, and with this bottom lash mascara Clinique totally proves that to be true! I realise I am a little late jumping on the bandwagon for this much hyped about product but I always just thought..why would anyone need a special bottom lash mascara and just wrote it off as another gimmicky makeup item. But do I wear mascara on my bottom lashes? Yes everyday! I feel it opens and frames my eyes, especially since my lashes are fair but I always used the same mascara as for the top lashes. At a recent Clinique event I found this little tube in my goodie bag and was curious to finally put it to the test to see if it really was good as people claimed...

Clinique Bottom Lash Mascara is basically a baby mascara bottle (2ml) with a miniature wand to allow perfect application of the mascara into your bottom lashes, it even reaches all those tricky-to-reach lashes!

The best thing about this little beauty however is its formula! Clinique Bottom Lash Mascara is made from a polymer formula that will not budge, smudge of flake, but as soon as bath water temperature water hits it, the mascara "relaxes" and can be removed easily!

I had pretty much accepted the fact that the mascara on my bottom lashes would always flake or smudge throughout the day but NO MORE! I was super impressed with the lasting-power of this bottom lash mascara. My bottom lashes still look black, defined and pretty after a long day at work...plus it even withstood the gym test!

LashAngel London mobile eyelash extensions

I got eyelash extensions last summer and loved it so much that I decided it was a must have for my summer holiday to Croatia! The beauty of having eyelash extensions for my holiday would mean not having to bother with waterproof mascara at all and being able to wake up (on a small sailing boat) and having beautiful dark curled lashes ready to go! Last year I got mine done by the lovely Kym from LashLab. You can read that review and more information on lash extensions here (link).

However before going on holiday I was so busy and I just couldn't seem to find the time to fit in an appointment to get my semi permanent lashes applied. Then I was saved by a friend of mine who recommended me to use Lash Angel, who offer a mobile service all over London! I got in contact with Vanessa who was available to come to my house at 8.30pm in Notting Hill to apply the extensions in the comfort of my own bedroom!

She applied a full set of lashes (which is about 70-90 lashes per eye) at a cost of £80. The whole procedure took about an hour and a half to complete but whilst lying on my own bed, music playing in the background.... I actually almost fell asleep, that's how comfortable I was! 

Here are some before and after pictures taken on the night.

I asked for long curled full lashes but specified that I didn't want them to look too fake so they wouldn't feel too over the top during the daytime on the beach or whilst sailing. I was very happy with the final look! 

Because each extension is applied to your own individual lashes I think it looks very natural.

All of the above photos are taken with ZERO makeup or mascara!

Some of the fantastic advantages of lash extensions are:

- They lengthen, thicken and give you a permanently curled lashed look

- They are waterproof and you don't need to fuss with wearing mascara

- Your extensions will last several weeks. At least 3-4 weeks depending on how well you look after them. 

- Lash extensions do not cause lash loss but they will fall out over time as you lose your own lashes.

- They can be worn for extended periods until your own lash completes it's life cycle

- When applied professionally lashes can last 3 months with one or two touch ups in between (normally about £50 for top-up treatments)

Here a photo of my eyes made up to show you how easily the lashes can look more dramatic and ready for a night out :) All I did was apply MAC Club eyeshadow to my eye lid, the lower lash line and added some (water based) mascara to my lower lashes to balance out and darken the look.

It has now been four weeks and my lashes are still looking pretty amazing! I am definitely using Vanessa again because the lashes have been great quality and getting them done at home was just ideal. I think in 1-2 weeks I will get some in-fills done so my lashes will last me for my next holiday to the USA at the end of August!

Looking a little TOWIE but loving it!

Last night I went to an event at Vanilla (which is this uber glam bar in the London West End)  where I got to browse around the latest & greatest by Kiehl’s, Shu Uemura and Biotherm. On arrival I was instantly mesmerised by all the fabulous fake lashes the Shu Uemera people had on display and was so lucky to get myself fitted with some rather fluttery lashes! Normally I tend to go for the more ‘natural’ fake lashes look but last night I was drawn to a slightly bolder pair. I have to say I felt rather TOWIE but actually loved it :)
For anyone that’s not familiar with TOWIE – this stands for ‘The Only Way Is Essex’ which is a popular (scripted) reality TV show in the UK. Basically girls from TOWIE are all about trash/glam including fake-tans, fake-boobs, fake-hair and fake-lashes!
What do you think? It’s a bit more dramatic than I am used to and to me it felt  quite obvious & fake but when I met some girlfriends for dinner after the event they all said it looked really nice. I got to keep the lashes so I might attempt to put them on again for a glam night out :)

Happy Hump Day to you all :) Hope your week is going well. Mine has been pretty busy and is flying by which suits me fine! I am counting down until Friday morning because then I will be off to Nice, in the South of France, for a 3 day weekend with some girlfriends. I can’t wait to soak up the last bit of sunshine and warmth before winter officially arrives.

Outfit wise I was wearing a dress I had picked up in the ZARA sale recently for only £29! I haven't really worn anything that green before, but got lots of compliments so I am glad I got it! And yes...I am wearing my new Tiffany & Co silver ball earrings!

Wimp to WOW with lash extensions by Lash Lab

Hey my lovelies,
After reading so many raving reviews and having my mini experience with lash extensions a few weeks back…I decided to go for it; to get myself a full set amazing fluttery lashes! So I booked an appointment with the lovely Kym from Lash Lab who is an expert in the field of lash extensions.

Lash Lab is based in the heart of Brick Lane London in Shoreditch, near Old Street which makes it very convenient for people based in the city plus central & east London. They specialise exclusively in semi-permanent extensions for your eyelashes. At Lash Lab, your lashes will be tailored to suit your eyes, face shape and, of course, your personal preference!

Kym offers only full lash sets (priced at £85) and no half or “demi” sets, or “just a few in the corners” because she feels that more lashes add more definition, fullness and longevity to your set. Natural sets look more luscious and fluffy, and bolder sets more sumptuous and dramatic. Incomplete sets are often difficult to blend in with your natural lashes since there are so few lashes to go around, resulting in a look that appears unfinished.

So just in case you are new to all of this, let me explain what eye lash extensions actually are!

Semi-permanent eyelash extensions are the latest beauty craze to take over the world. Wimpey, thin, light lashes are transformed – one lash at a time – into a long, thick, luxurious set. The process involves attaching single strands of high quality synthetic eyelashes, one by one, onto your own natural lashes to mimic, enhance, and “extend” your own natural lashes. A variety of extensions are applied to add volume, length and curl. Styling of lashes will be tailored to suit your eyes, face shape and, of course, your personal preference.

How long do eyelash extensions last? Lash extensions when looked after properly should last 4 to 6 weeks. Over time you will shed your extensions as you lose your natural lashes, and through every day wear and tear. Your lash extensions will become sparse over time, and in-fills can be applied to replace the extensions that have fallen off.

 Lash extensions are really delicate and you do need to take care of them and be gentle to avoid them falling out prematurely.  Exposure to steam, very hot temperatures or water, touching, picking, or rubbing your lashes can weaken the adhesive bond on your extensions and cause them to fall off.

So two weeks ago I went to Lash Lab to get my new fluttery lashes applied by Kym. On arrival she talked me through the process and consulted me on what kind of look I was hoping for. I didn't want a 'Jordan' or very over the top fake lashes look so I asked for natural looking fluttery lashes - basically me but better! The idea would be that they will look the same (or maybe a little bit better) than they normally do when I curl them and wear mascara. After the consultation I was told to lie down on a comfortable massage couch and after about 1 1/2 hours (which was spend chatting to the lovely Kym and OK maybe a little snooze) the procedure was done!

Did it hurt? No, a propert application of lash extensions should not hurt. The extensions are attached to your natural lashes and not the skin and therefore clients do not feel a thing.

The below before and after pictures were taken on the day, actually at the salon, directly after application. In the before pictures I am wearing NO make up and in the after shots it's just my new lashes without any mascara! Impressed? I am :)

How do the eyelash extensions look and feel after the procedure?
Eyelash extensions should look and feel like your natural lashes, and to the untrained eye no one can tell they are not your natural lashes. You should not feel any pain or discomfort in or around your eyes after the procedure. Lashes should be clean and well separated with no clumping or lumps of adhesive visible. Kym told me she has carried out numerous remedial work on clients who have had dangerous and poorly applied eyelash extensions elsewhere where the client has experienced clumping, pain, discomfort, or damage to their own natural lashes – this is not normal! I didn't feel a thing and I have had them for two weeks now and I don't feel any pain or discomfort. They feel soft and you don't really notice they are there (feel wise that is!)

There are numerous reports floating around that eyelash extensions will damage your own natural lashes which was a concern I had before doing the procedure. Kym assured me that properly applied eyelash extensions should not damage your natural lashes. Clients should not experience pain to their eyelids or premature shedding of their natural lashes. Lash extensions may be removed with professional gel remover, and once the extensions are taken off your natural lashes should remain intact and in its normal condition. If I experience otherwise after 3-6 weeks, I will report it here!

Overall, I have to say it was a brilliant experience and so far am still loving my lashes. It's so nice to wake up every morning and having dark, long and curly lashes. Doing my eye makeup these days is such a breeze with no curling or mascara required :)

I love this bright blue dress. I got it about 3-4 years ago when I was on holiday in Noosa (Australia). It's by Zimmermann, an Australian swimwear & fashion designer. Also if you are wondering, wow roz your hair is looking really long.....well it's because I cheated :) I recently found my old clip-in hair extensions again and decided to give my hair that little bit extra oomph and length for the night, do you like?? xoxo

Eyeko BIG Eyes

A while back I got the Eyeko Big Eyes Mascara from ASOS and have now used it for a while so thought I'd do a quick review to let you know my thoughts :)

What they say:

PS: makeup wise I am wearing Urban Decay Baked e/s on the inner lid with Urban Decay Darkhorse on mid/outer lid, blended into crease and along lower lash line. Bourjous Effet Smoky Pencils in Ultra Black on the waterline and MAC liquid liner on the top lash line.

♥ Pro's
Cute packaging and comes in squeezable tube (which means no product is wasted)
The brush is thin and long, with widely spread spiral bristles. I really like the wand because it coats every lash and allows you to apply the mascara with precision. 
Very long lasting, without flaking or smudging throughout the day
Nice strong/deep black formula which is non drying
Mascara lengthens, volumises and really holds the curl to my lashes.  Great for a dramatic look!

♥ Con's
The mascara applies quite 'wet' and will start to thicken when it dries. This is fine but does mean that you need apply your second coat of mascara before the first coat has fully set and dried because otherwise it's nearly impossible to add another layer.
The other main downside for me is that the mascara is really hard to remove. I prefer mascara that removes easily (say with water in the shower) and I don't tend to wear a lot of waterproof mascara. This mascara isn't marketed as waterproof,  but there is no way you will get this product off without makeup remover (and even then you need to apply quite a bit of pressure to get it off!)
When removing, the mascara kind of disintegrated into little pieces instead of dissolving. However the plus side to this is that the mascara is super long lasting. Therefore I tend to wear this mascara if I am going out at night so I know my lashes will look lovely all night long! :)

Overall I think this is a great 'drugstore' mascara, especially if you are looking for long lasting dramatic 'Big Eyes' :)

Little Red Riding Hood

A few weeks back one of my close girlfriends in London had her flat warming party and in true antipodean style, they decided to made it a themed dress up party! I absolutely love dress up parties, it makes house parties a lot more fun, especially when people make a proper effort to create or make costumes! The theme for her housewarming was 'Animated Antics' which meant "if you were an animated character who or what would you be?" It took me a while to decide what to dress up as because couldn't think of many cartoon characters I admired growing up...(I wasn't allowed to watch much TV when I was little haha). So in the end I chose to go as a fairy-tale  character: Little Red Riding Hood! Here some photos taken on the night:

Because I wanted to wear a shiny red lip, I decided on natural eye make up but then glamourised with big fluttery eye lashes! I used Ardell fake lashes, which I have only recently discovered. Their Babies Black lashes come as a set with their own little glue sachet. They feature an invisible, lightweight band that connects the hair strands to form a strip that ensures secure corners. They are knotted and feathered by hand, reusable, easy to apply, comfortable to wear and made of 100% human hair. I really liked the effect as it looked natural yet gave my eyes that extra little sexy spikey pop! These lashes are priced at £5.10. I would definitely recommend Ardell Lashes. I first heard about it through the incredibly talented ladies of Pixiwoo when it featured in one of their videos. (Ps: check their website & YouTube channel out if you don't know them! Uh-mazing tutorials!) So now let me tell you about one of my favourite makeup items at the moment: MakeUp Forever - Lash Fibers!

"Lash Fibers is a fiber-enriched base to mascara. Applied before mascara it adds lengths and volume to your lashes and maximizes their volume for a spectacular effect. Its creamy texture immediately wraps the lashes and sets immediately. Enriched with active ingredients, its formula nourishes, protects and strengthens lashes"

Basically you add this product as a primer for your lashes, covering it with little white fibers. Apply by wiggling the brush along the lashes to completely sheathe lashes with the fibers. Repeat as desired, let it set for a few seconds and then apply your normal mascara over the top! This is me with the product applied pre-mascara. I know it looks a little weird; the white lashes...

Then here is the finished result. On the left is my eye WITH Lash Fibers + Mascara &on the right is my eye only with mascara! Can you see the added volume and  length?

I absolutely love it! Ok it's not quite like falsies and I wouldn't wear this every day but when I am going out or want a little bit more volume and drama without going for the full false lash effect - this products is PERFECT!

It applies really easily and smoothly & I like that it volumises and lengthens without clumping all the lashes together. It was quite tricky to get good 'photographic evidence' showing you the proper results but all I can say is that I really notice it & love it! Dublin Girls Night FOTN$

This weekend I was in Dublin, Ireland for a fun weekend with a girlfriend, out and about exploring a new city! On the Friday night we hit up the 'Temple Bar' area in Dublin for a night out on the town. Fake 'Katy Perry' Lashes by StyleEyes Lashes 

I recently discovered StyleEyes Lashes via the gorgeous Laura - a fellow beauty blogger! She started this eye lashes business with 3 friends part of a University project. They sell set's of fake eyelashes (10x per pack!) in the following styles:

- Katy Perry

- Rihanna

- Cheryl Cole

- Frankie Sandford

The lashes are priced at only £5 per pack of TEN (not including glue) which is such a bargain! I was super impressed with the lashes and the look they gave me. After a bit of fiddling - I am still no expert on the fake lashes front - I just applied them with Revlon Precision Lash Adhesive Glue (purchased at Boots and they stayed put all night. I loved the effect of the Katy Perry lashes, giving me longer spikey lashes without looking too full on! My friend (below) wore the Cheryl Cole ones which were more dramatic but so much fun!
